Wedding function outfit checklist: plan every look

A simple checklist for wedding season: outfit, blouse fitting, jewellery, footwear, bag, touch-up kit and budget, planned function by function.

Cover card reading: Wedding function outfit checklist.

Wedding season in India often means several functions in one week: mehendi, haldi, sangeet, the wedding and the reception. And somehow, the night before each one, we are still searching for the matching earrings or finding that the blouse doesn't fit.

A little planning a week or two ahead saves all of that. Here is a simple checklist.

Step 1: list every function

Write down each function, its date and what kind of event it is.

FunctionDateDay or nightIndoor or outdoorDress code or colour
Mehendi
Haldi
Sangeet

Reception

Knowing whether it is a daytime haldi in a garden or a night reception in a hall changes everything: the fabric, the colour, the footwear and how heavy the jewellery can be.

Step 2: shop your own wardrobe first

Before buying anything, look at what you already own. Most of us have sarees, lehengas and suits that were worn once or twice. A new blouse, a different dupatta or different jewellery can make an old outfit look completely new. We show how in one saree, three functions.

Step 3: the checklist for each look

For every function, tick off:

Outfit

  • Saree, lehenga, suit or Indo-western outfit chosen
  • Blouse tried on (do this at least a week ahead, in case it needs altering)
  • Petticoat or inner layers ready
  • Dupatta or shawl
  • Ironed or steamed, and hung up ready

Jewellery

  • Necklace or set
  • Earrings
  • Bangles or bracelets
  • Maang tikka, nose pin or hair accessories, if wearing
  • Checked for broken hooks and missing stones

Footwear and bag

  • Footwear that goes with the outfit and that you can stand in for hours
  • Clutch or small bag

Small things people forget

  • Safety pins and bobby pins
  • Saree pins or brooch
  • Touch-up kit: tissues, compact, kajal, lipstick
  • A small shawl for air-conditioned halls

Step 4: match the jewellery to the outfit, not the other way round

  • Heavy embroidery on the outfit? Keep the jewellery lighter, such as statement earrings without a heavy necklace.
  • A plain silk saree? This is where a bold necklace or a temple set can shine.
  • Daytime function? Lighter pieces usually look fresher in daylight.

Step 5: set a budget for each function

Wedding season costs add up quickly: gifts, alterations, new pieces, salon visits. Decide a budget for each function before you start, and note what you actually spend. It is much easier to stop at ₹1,500 when you can see you have already spent ₹1,200.

Step 6: note what you wore

After each wedding, write down what you wore, to which function and for whose wedding. Next season, you will know exactly which outfit your relatives have already seen, and which looks were a hit.

Keep it all in one place

Paper lists work, but they get lost. The Closet & Jewellery Diary is a Google Sheet on your phone where you can save your looks, plan each function in the Festive Calendar and set a budget for each one.

For the makeup side of things, read makeup that lasts in humid weather. Many wedding venues get hot and crowded.
